Poussez Poussez

We Was Them Kids / Poussez Poussez / Alvaro Ilizarbe @ HVW8 gallery

‘Poussez Poussez’ / Acrylic on wood / 21″ x 23″ x 3″ / 2011

This piece was part of ‘We Was Them Kids’ group show at HVW8 gallery. Right before I was asked to be a part of this show I stumbled upon a Haitian religious celebration. We walked into the church grounds and we were submersed into the marching crowd chanting ‘Poussez Poussez’. This is a personification of that energy I felt within the celebratory madness.

Good Vibrations

Posted on October 25th, 2011

The focus of this installation was about the relationship between space and energy. Comfort and tension. I painted a black and white pattern on a large piece that hung on the outside of the space. This same pattern was photographed and made into wallpaper that was plastered on the walls of the passageway/maze. The passageway was a space for the viewer to travel through and connect with the work.

The work was exhibited at the Wynwood Art Fair for Carol Jazzar Gallery.

In-Between

Posted on June 15th, 2011

Narwhal Art Projects presents IN-BETWEEN a solo exhibition by Alvaro Ilizarbe / Freegums. For this show Alvaro is exploring space, patterns, and the energy that lies in-between. He has painted black and white patterns on amorphous wooden pieces which hang on an identically patterned wallpaper. The wood paintings’ swirling lines blend seamlessly into the background, becoming one. Contrasting line work creates a visual vibration and a tension within the space. Through this, Alvaro is revealing the awareness of spatial energy that lies between oneself and the object.

Dadarhea / OhWOW

Posted on August 15th, 2010

An idea born from an absurd dream involving pee filled supersoakers and deep fried laptops. It’s a dadaist pizzeria. It’s idea-rhea. It’s the video art equivalent to fantasy island – where Devin Flynn is the Mr. Roarke to Jim Drain’s tattoo.

Dadarhea is freeform video workshop with a group of guest artists who pride themselves on confounding their audiences, allowing them to employ animation, live action video (on location and greenscreen), musical performance, or any and all improvised & questionable behavior. Through the month of July, a residency at OHWOW (MIAMI) and at Bec Stupak’s Honeygun Labs (NYC) will take place in order to experiment with the possiblity of total video saturation. The finished video will premiere on August 13th with an accompanying installation comprised of any and all emphemera related to the project. Dadarhea-ists include: Devin Flynn, Jim Drain, Naomi Fisher, Ara Peterson, Joe Grillo, Takeshi Murata, Francine Speigel, Melissa Brown, Marie Lorenz, Todd James, Brian Belott, Jessie Gold, Michael Williams, Erin Krause, Alvaro Ilizarbe, Jen Stark, Friends With You, Billy Grant, Laura Grant, Alison Kuo, Eric Fensler…and more!
